Court Results put on Twitter by West Midlands Police

Because of a decline in court reporting in recent years, an initiative was designer to make the public more aware of the cases police deal with. A 24h twitter marathon was held in which the West Midlands Police were allowed to post small descriptions of the cases they encountered on the popular site. Mr. Anderson, the starter of the initiative, hopes that the ´tweet-a-thon' will give people a flavor of the range of offenders the police deal with, an insight into the court system and peace of mind that justice is being done.

I think this initiative might be a good one, but could also cause some problems. On one hand it is a good thing that the police are trying to raise awareness and that they are focusing on gaining the trust of the common people. Also, an important factor is freedom of speech. These officers have the right to talk about their jobs. However, I do think this might cause some trouble with people's privacy being invaded. I do not think many people like being put on twitter after committing a crime.

  1. This is a tough one, and a classical case at it: freedom of speech versus privacy. I think this is a good initiative though because people seem to know very little about what the police is actually doing and why they are doing it. It might just get the police some respect back, which they seem to get less and less of every year.

ps: '', an initiative was designer'' designer -r +d You might be into desingers and stuff but it has little to do with this article ;)

  3. Oh man... I made a typo whilst trying to correct your typo. This is so ironic it almost hurts.

  4. It depends on what you find more important, privacy or insight. For me I think transparacy is good. us, now ignorant citizens should know what is being decided upon.
I always have the feeling that we as citizens are being kept ignorant so I think this is a good initiative.
